Product management and product development are disciplines well-known in much of the business world, but rarely mentioned in newsrooms, although most newsrooms actually practice a form of project management in putting out the paper each day. Learn how to develop and apply product management and project management skills to existing products and projects and to quickly nurture and develop new products for your audience and advertisers.

Session Recap:

To address the changing and fragmented newspaper audience, many news media organizations are developing products to increase reader engagement. A product/project management team is essential to bringing the initiatives to fruition. Follow these best practices to ensure success.

Communicate
o   Confirm that all team members have interest in the project to obtain the best results.
o   Champion products/projects to different departments so everyone is on the same page.
o   Inform readers about what’s happening next to create excitement and engagement.
o   Respond quickly to new opportunities .

Investigate
o   Use research to learn.
o   Test assumptions – most start out wrong.
o   Survey readers after launching a new product or service to assess response.

Empower
o   Choose product/project managers carefully – soft skills are very important to help win by influence, not by control.
o   Allow managers to own a project, and provide back-up help to them.
o   Encourage others to admit they don’t understand something, and to ask more questions.
