Michael J. Klingensmith is publisher and CEO of Star Tribune Media Company LLC with overall responsibility for all news and business operations of the company.
Klingensmith, a native of the Twin Cities, joined the Star Tribune in January, 2010, after spending most of his more than 40-year career in publishing with Time Inc. in New York City.
He started at Time Inc. in 1976 and over his career held management positions across the company, including general manager of Time Magazine and CFO of Time Inc. He was the co-developer of the concept for Entertainment Weekly and became its founding publisher in 1989, leading the magazine through its launch to its emergence as one of Time Inc.’s most profitable titles.
In 1998, he was named president of Sports Illustrated, where he grew the franchise by expanding in print, digital, television and events. He helped established the ground-breaking SI.com digital business. In 2001, he became executive vice president at Time Inc. in charge of one of the company’s three operating groups.
Klingensmith left Time Inc. in 2008 and became a managing director of AdMedia Partners, a New York mergers and acquisition advisory firm, prior to joining the Star Tribune in 2010. In November 2011 he was named Publisher of the Year by Editor & Publisher magazine. The Star Tribune publishes the nation’s fifth largest circulation Sunday newspaper and has been one of the leaders in selling digital subscriptions. The paper won two Pulitzer Prizes in 2013 and has been one of the top performing metro newspapers in recent years.
Klingensmith, who has an M.B.A. and a B.A. from the University of Chicago, grew up in suburban Minneapolis. He serves on the boards of The University of Chicago, Macalester College, The Minnesota Orchestra, YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities and is currently Chairman of the News Media Alliance.
