Matt DeRienzo is executive director of LION Publishers, a national organization representing local independent online news publishers. Its more than 140 members in 36 states include both non-profit and for-profit business models, with coverage ranging from a single city neighborhood or suburban community, to regional news sites, niche news sites and statewide government and politics sites.
He's worked in the journalism business for 23 years as a reporter, editor, publisher and news director. Newspapers he has led have been recognized with the Associated Press Media Editors' innovator of the year award and the Robert C. McGruder Award for Leadership in Newsroom Diversity.
Prior to working with LION, he served as editor of the New Haven Register, Connecticut Magazine and sister publications in Connecticut, and Northeast Region Editor for Digital First Media. Previously, he worked as a publisher and corporate director of news for the former Journal Register Co. DeRienzo started his career at weekly and daily newspapers in Maine and New Hampshire.
He has also taught journalism at the University of New Haven and Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
