Tony Dearing is Director of News Operations for NJ Advance Media, the largest news organization in New Jersey, and provider of digital and print coverage for NJ.com and the Star-Ledger. Tony landed his first paid job in journalism as a sports correspondent for his hometown daily newspaper at the age of 18, launching a 40-year career that led him to become the editor of two daily newspapers and eventually to play a leadership role in the digital transformation of the news industry. He was the editor of the Bay City Times and the Flint Journal in Michigan, then left the world of print to help launch AnnArbor.com, one of the early efforts in digital-first journalism. He joined NJ.com as Local Content Director in 2012, and made the transition to NJ Advance Media when that company launched in 2014. In addition to his managerial duties at NJAM, he writes an award-winning column devoted to brain health, prevention of dementia and successful aging. His personal interests include travel, opera and playing golf at a skill level that continues to make him wonder why he ever took up the game.
