Dennis Anderson, executive editor of the Journal Star in Peoria, Illinois, says his mission is to grow underserved readership areas. “To be a part of the community, you need to be there,” Anderson told the Columbia Journalism Review in September 2015. During his five years at the Journal Star, the newspaper has been recognized twice by Editor & Publisher’s “10 That Do It Right,” been named GateHouse Media’s Newspaper of the Year and Member of the Year twice by the Illinois Associated Press. Prior to Peoria, Anderson was top editor of the Journal-World in Lawrence, Kansas, which won the Associated Press Media Editors’ Digital Storytelling Award for three consecutive years. Anderson spent 10 years with Gannett newspapers, including as managing editor at the Norwich Bulletin in Connecticut and metro editor at the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin in New York. A Chicago native, Anderson worked at the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill., last serving as a bureau chief. He is treasurer of the Associated Press Media Editors board. Anderson enjoys exercising, walking his dogs, reading and anything to do with hockey.
